At VEGA SCHOOLS, we believe that literacy is the foundation of confident learning and meaningful expression. अkshर is our comprehensive literacy initiative designed to nurture strong reading skills while fostering a genuine love for books and language among our students. The program aims to ensure that every child not only learns to read well, but also learns to enjoy reading as a lifelong habit.
Through thoughtfully designed practices and a rich reading environment, अkshर helps children explore stories, ideas, and information with curiosity and confidence. The focus is not only on developing reading ability, but also on helping students discover the joy, imagination, and knowledge that books can bring into their lives.

BAS Assessment
Beginning in UKG, when children start reading independently, students undergo the Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) developed by Fountas & Pinnell. This internationally recognized reading assessment helps determine each child’s reading level and comprehension ability. Based on the assessment, teachers are able to design targeted interventions and guided support to help every child progress confidently in their reading journey.
Class Libraries
Every classroom houses a carefully curated class library so that books remain within easy reach of children throughout the school day. In collaboration with One Up Library, the books are thoughtfully selected to match students’ reading levels, interests, and age groups, ensuring that children are constantly surrounded by engaging and meaningful reading material.
Dedicated Reading Spaces
To cultivate a calm and inviting reading culture, the school provides comfortable reading corners and spaces where children can sit, relax, and immerse themselves in books. These spaces are designed to give students the time, comfort, and quiet needed to enjoy reading at their own pace.
DEAR - Drop Everything And Read
Under the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) program, students pause their regular classroom activities to focus solely on reading. During this time, children may read aloud or silently while teachers guide the process to ensure that the experience remains enjoyable and engaging. This practice strengthens reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence.
Weekly Child-Friendly Newspapers
Students also engage with weekly age-appropriate newspapers, which introduce them to the habit of reading current information in an accessible format. This initiative helps broaden their awareness of the world while encouraging them to think, discuss, and express their ideas clearly and thoughtfully.
