As I walked into the learning space, it looked remarkably open, with learners interacting with peers and learning leaders, collaborating and engaging. With this, I could conclude that space matters. Coming from a traditional teaching setup, it was a challenge to comprehend the absence of demarcations, doors, or dedicated classrooms for the process of learning and teaching. In this setting, learners had their own spaces to engage, collaborate, and explore. What held the utmost significance was that the traditional question, “Whose child is this?” had shattered its conventional boundaries. In this context, all individuals were both learners and peers, embarking on a journey of shared growth and learning. This is where Vega Schools differ from others, creating confident and independent future learners.

At Vega Schools, the relationship between spaces, humans, and objects is well understood. This 21st-century learning environment is student-centered. The teachers are now referred to as ‘Learning Leaders,’ and we wholeheartedly embrace the idea that ‘every day presents a fresh opportunity for learning’. We function as facilitators for hands-on activities, and problem-solving, and aid learners in their collaborative efforts and the integration of various subjects. A place where students learn from one another, have access to technology, and cultivate a profound sense of belonging within a dynamic learning community – this encapsulates the essence of Vega Schools, symbolizing an innovative classroom design for the 21st century.

Learners and their learning take place in open spaces designed to facilitate collaboration, idea-sharing, and engagement. These spaces include group seating, standing desks, coffee tables, and active seating. The windows provide ample light and sunshine, creating a happy and enriching environment. Learners have strong preferences for the furniture they use and the spaces in which they work. This environment promotes increased mobility, interactions, and heightened productivity within the learning spaces. Learners are attuned to their physical comfort and readiness for work. Vega Schools truly believes in student and classroom management for independent problem-solving, which further enhances focus and listening.

Twenty-first-century learners have specific needs that educators must address, and Vega Schools excel in this area. Besides mastering the curriculum, students also need a diverse set of skills to succeed in their interactions with various subjects. Learning and innovation skills, such as ‘Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Communication, and Collaboration’ are highly emphasized at Vega Schools. Students also require essential life skills such as ‘Flexibility and Adaptability, Initiative and Self-Direction, Social and Cross-Cultural Skills, Productivity and Accountability, Leadership & Responsibility’. In order to cultivate these skills, educators must adapt their teaching methods, and learning environments should be reshaped to cater to these requirements.

At Vega Schools, we are well-equipped to nurture future learners in a new classroom design that allows our students to rearrange their spaces, move furniture, and adjust the setting to suit their needs. It’s truly amazing to have a well-designed overflow area where our learners can work in small groups beyond their regular learning spaces. There is no corner where learning doesn’t happen. In the end, Vega Schools exemplifies the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Here, the entire community of educators and administrators is present, active, and accountable in the learners’ lives to help them experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment.
