Sitting in the cafeteria at Vega Schools in Gurugram, enjoying my meal as usual, I found myself reflecting on the magic before me—food. Food, one of the most basic necessities of life, is much more than sustenance. It plays a vital role in our celebrations, cultures, emotions, and communities. But as I gazed at my plate, I couldn’t help but wonder about the journey it had been on—from seed to plate

That tiny seed, planted in the earth, has seen so much. It has weathered seasons, witnessed rituals, and borne the fruits of labor. Who could have imagined that something so small could endure such a long, challenging journey and transform into something on which all living beings depend? It seems that even a seed has much to teach us about perseverance, growth, and the interconnectedness of life.

I’m reminded of a memory from my childhood. My grandmother once grew a pumpkin in a small tub on our terrace. I was fascinated by the process and overjoyed at watching it grow. Though, as a child, I didn’t have the patience to wait for it to ripen, my grandmother shared stories of how, back in her village, they cultivated crops in large fields, tending to them with care and dedication.

The soil had to be prepared with precision—removing weeds, plowing, and ensuring it was ready to nurture the seeds. Once the seeds were sown, nature played its part, with weather, water, and fertilizers joining forces to support their growth. Slowly, the seeds took root, absorbing nutrients from the soil while stretching toward the sky. Along the way, the farmers cared for them lovingly, celebrating each small milestone of growth. Eventually, the seed, once so tiny, stood tall, ready to leave the soil that had nurtured it. It was harvested, and sent to markets, homes, and schools, carrying with it the love, care, and blessings it received throughout its journey.

Now, as I look at my plate, I wonder—did that tiny seed ever imagine it would end up here, nourishing students at Vega Schools one day?
