On May 12, 2023, CBSE exam results were declared, and there was a sigh of relief among students who were anxious for good results. The overall pass percentage for Class 10 results this year is 93.12%, which is down by 1.28% since last year. Girls are reported to have outperformed boys once again, recording a pass percentage of 94.23. The pass percentage for boys stood at 92.23%.

Learners must analyze the trends of past years to familiarize themselves with changes happening in the pattern, level of question papers, and measures required to excel in the upcoming 2024 board exams.

Subject-Wise Performance: It has been seen over some time that learners often consider mathematics and science challenging for them. On the other hand, subjects like English and social science have higher pass percentages and average marks. Learners need to prepare by keeping in mind that one subject can shake the overall percentage, so it becomes essential that learners give equal attention to all subjects.

Rise in High Scores: There has been a significant increase in the number of students scoring above 90% and 95%. Approximately 1,95,799 students achieved scores above 90%, and 44,297 students received scores higher than 95%. This suggests that students are putting in extreme effort to excel academically and are benefiting from various educational resources that are available in abundant quantities.

Change in Pattern: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has changed the examination and assessment scheme for CBSE board exams for the 10th and 12th classes. The suggested alterations in the format of the question paper involve an increase in the weightage of competency-based questions and MCQs. Hence, there will be a lesser number of short and long answer questions as compared to the previous years’ exams.

The changes were introduced keeping in mind the recommendations that were mentioned in NEP-2020. Now, the time has arrived to move from rote learning to learning more focused on developing the creative, analytical, and critical thinking capacities of the students.

Competency-Based Questions: Competency-based questions are asked in the form of reasoning and assertion, case studies, response-based, MCQ-type, or any other format of questions. These questions focus on testing the application of learning in real-life or practical situations, thereby assessing the candidates’ higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). Hence, it aims at enhancing qualitative and logical learning among students as opposed to the memorization of core concepts.

The Road Ahead: After CBSE Board Exam Results 2023-24, one thing is clear now: rote learning has to go. With these recommendations, students need to work on their creativity and application-based education. Problem-solving skills cannot be developed over some time; it has to be done every day in the classroom, and these two points are considered utmost important:

  1. Attentiveness towards unfamiliar situations and their consequences.
  2. Broaden your thinking abilities beyond the academic curriculum.

Thus, the days are gone when students had to follow definitions and learn theories. Now, they are expected to be more observant of real-life situations and miscellaneous incidents taking place in society.

Vega Schools are so proud of the grade X students who scored outstanding marks in the 2022-23 CBSE Board exams. It validates that rote learning is on its way out and an era of learning by understanding and doing is being ushered in.
