A Father’s hard work and a daughter’s dream come true
When her father chose to bring a TT table home during the lockdown, Divyanshi’s ascent to the top of the sport began. She is currently rated third in the world in U15, fourteenth in U17, and twenty-fourth in U19. She soon found herself playing with her father and sister for four to five hours every day. However, Divyanshi lost early at her first Nationals, which made her father try to figure out what went wrong. He was informed that his daughter would not be able to compete at an elite level for three to four years.
After her qualifying loss, I asked the coach how we should improve. I was informed that things don’t move very quickly and that it would take a considerable amount of time. I took matters into my own hands because I couldn’t handle this,” says
At the Asian Youth Table Tennis Championships, Divyanshi defeated three Chinese players en route to winning India’s first gold medal in 36 years, proving that the investment was beneficial.
A historic Win after 36 years
Divyanshi, who made her senior debut in the WTT Star Contender tournament at the age of 14, was thrown at the deep end in Chennai a few months before winning the gold medal. She overcame Italian Olympian and World No. 64 Giorgia Piccolin in the opening round. Additionally, she won WTT Contender Youth titles in the U13, U15, and U17 divisions and a silver medal in doubles at the 2023 ITTF World Youth Championships.
It’s a really significant performance. Kamlesh Mehta, a multiple-time former national champion and current general secretary of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI), claims that she has defeated three Chinese competitors and that Liu Ziling, the player she defeated in the semifinals, had previously defeated her three times. “That player is really strong and at ease with Bhowmick’s style of play and the rubber he uses.” That alone says a lot about what she has accomplished.
