The festive season often arrives with a long list: new clothes, sweets, gifts, and plans. Amid all that receiving, one question deserves space. How do children learn to give?

Gratitude is easy to say and harder to practise. This guide shows how families can turn “thank you” into “thank you in action” with simple, age-friendly ideas.

Why Giving Back Matters

""

Children rarely learn gratitude by being told to feel it. Instead, they learn it by doing something for someone else. As a result, a small act, like sharing sweets with a neighbour, teaches more than a long talk about being thankful.

Giving also builds empathy. When children see how a gesture affects another person, they begin to notice needs around them. They also learn that kindness does not always require money, a big plan, or a special occasion.

Four Ways to Give, Beyond Money

Giving doesn’t have to cost much. In fact, children can give in four simple ways.

Way to Give
What It Looks Like
Festive Example

Time
Helping or spending time with someone
Helping a neighbour clean or decorate

Things
Sharing items in good condition
Donating gently used clothes, books, or toys

Skills
Using a talent to help
Making greeting cards or rangoli

Kindness
Small, daily gestures
Thanking the guard, cleaner, or delivery person

A Simple Giving Plan for the Festive Weeks

""

Big plans often fade. Therefore, a short, clear plan works better.

 1. Choose together. First, let children pick one cause or person. Ownership makes them care more.

 2. Make it specific. Next, decide what to give and who will receive it.

 3. Prepare as a team. Then, sort, wrap, or write notes together.

 4. Deliver in person. Whenever possible, hand it over. Meeting the receiver makes giving real.

 5. Talk afterwards. Finally, ask, “How did that feel?” Reflection turns one act into a habit.
